You may ask, where did the name ‘Sparrow’ originate? Well, it has nothing to do with the Pirates of the Carribean (Jack Sparrow) or the bird. In fact, Sparrow is a reference to a book my father, Edward Fishman (1926-2004), gave me when I was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.
The name of the book was “Sparrows Point”, and it tells the story of Bethlehem Steel. The rise and fall of Bethlehem Steel is more than just a story to me; Bethlehem Steel was the first company that I bought stock in. I became intrigued not only with the steel industry but heavy industry in general. Also, while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, I regularly patrolled the waters off Sparrows Point.
I have always had a personal admiration for industrial companies. The men and women who work within these industries work hard, and their work helps produce the raw materials needed to support industrialization throughout the world. My admiration for industrial companies also partly comes from my father’s dedication to feverishly follow these companies on the NYSE. He believed in the hard work done by the industrial sector of America.
Throughout my years in the recruiting industry, I have recruited for (or recruited from) almost all of the companies that my father followed dealing in cement, steel, industrial minerals, copper, gold, silver, and paper.
